In the dawn of time,
God had lived long before.
But it was such a crime
To go with a heart sore
Without a companion.
Carefully, lovingly, He made her,
Until His work was done.
All of these things were
Before the Earth began
She was glorious, glowing with light
In God’s city that knew no night.
So much He loved her, he gave her a choice—
In His great kingdom, she had a voice.
Being love, He did not force love.
He offered love, but she refused
For she was proud—
Proud of the beauty He had given her
Jealous of the power He had.
O, how God wept, for how he had loved her!
Nothing could stop Him from His love,
Nothing could stop the pain in His heart.
What could He do to save her?
Thinking, pondering, weeping as He went
He suddenly had an idea that was sent
From the depths of His goodness and power.
Slowly, the idea opened like a flower.
He could save her, He would save her—
But to do this, He must die.
He must show her that He is good,
That He is the true ruler of the sky.
Surely His life was gift enough
To bring her back to Him.
Then, if only she could
Accept it.
Then she could live with Him.
How long he courted her,
Singing to her heart—
But she would not listen,
And still refused Him.
“Do You really love me?”
She asked Him haughtily,
Laughing in a way most naughtily.
“O, I love you,”
Said God sadly.
“I love you more than you can imagine.”
“How much?” she sneered,
In a voice so stale and thin.
God smiled at her,
The smile of a Savior.
“I love you this much,”
He said, using his hands
To show her.
He stretched them far apart—
He stretched and stretched
And stretched--
And died.
O, how she wept now!
O, how she cried!
For none can love like God,
And now He, her creator
Was gone.
“Forgive me, Lord!”
She cried out.
“I love You!”
She did shout
To Him as he lie.
It was so wrong for Him to die.
In despair, she turned to cry,
But through her tears she saw a light,
More brilliant than a thousand stars
More brilliant than the land of no more night,
And there He was.
O, how they wept with joy!
“Forgive me, my Lord and my God?”
She asked.
“Live with Me forever?”
He asked.
“For ever!”
And so He took her to the timeless land,
The land of no more night
And there forever they will stand
In a sea of endless light.
